🛠️ Practical Exercises – IP, DHCP, and DNS

🎯 Learning Objective

Verify for yourself that you understand the main principles of network configuration on Windows.

📜 Statement

Perform each activity on your virtual machine. You can use a file to note your answers and observations.

Exercise 1 – Observe your network configuration

Learn to identify key information: IP address, gateway, DNS, DHCP server.

Steps:

  1. Open a console (powershell) and type:
   ipconfig

What do you see? What does each piece of information mean?

Now type:

   ipconfig /all
  1. Identify and note the following information:

    • IPv4 Address:
    • Subnet Mask:
    • Default Gateway:
    • DHCP Server:
    • DNS Server(s):
    • MAC Address:
  2. Question: Was your IP address assigned automatically (DHCP) or is it static?

  3. Check if you can access the Internet:

    ping www.google.com

    What happens?

Exercise 2 – Test DHCP functionality

  1. Release your IP address:

    ipconfig /release

What happens? Do you still have an IP address? Can you access the Internet?

  2. Request a new one:

    ipconfig /renew

Were you assigned a new IP? Is it in the same range as the old one?

  3. Question: At what point does DHCP intervene in this process?

Exercise 3 – Find an IP address

  1. Use the ping command to find the IP address of www.google.com:

    ping www.google.com

What do you see? What is the IP address of www.google.com?

  2. Questions:

    • What is the IP address of the College (cmaisonneuve.qc.ca)?
    • What is the IP address of omnivox.cmaisonneuve.qc.ca?
    • Is it the same address? Why?
