Windows Virtual Machine

To test certain Windows features, it can be useful to use a virtual machine. This will prevent you from modifying, or even breaking, your main Windows installation. Here is a small, very incomplete guide to help you create a Windows virtual machine.

Prerequisites

  • Have VirtualBox installed on your machine. You can also use VMware products, such as VMware Workstation.
  • Download a Windows 11 ISO image. You can do this from the Microsoft site. You need to have a Microsoft account.

Creating the Virtual Machine

  • In VirtualBox or VMware, click on "New" to create a new virtual machine. Choose the standard installation mode.
warning

Installing Windows takes a lot of time. Hypervisors (VirtualBox, VMware, etc.) are sometimes finicky. So plan to do the installation sooner rather than later.
