Weak AI (Narrow AI)

Objective

This chapter explains Weak AI, the type we use today in our daily lives. You will learn what it is, where we find it, and how it works.

1. What is Weak AI?

Simple Definition

Weak AI is artificial intelligence dedicated to a single task or a specific set of tasks.

Simple Example:

  • Like a worker specialized in only one thing
  • Excels at this thing
  • But doesn't know other things

Key Characteristics

  1. Dedicated to a specific task:

    • Each program does one thing well
    • Example: image recognition only
  2. Excellent at its task:

    • Can be better than humans at its task
    • But only in this task
  3. Doesn't understand other things:

    • If you ask it something outside its task, it doesn't know
    • Example: a translation program doesn't know how to play chess

2. Everyday Life Examples

On Your Phone

Face Recognition:

  • Recognizes faces in photos
  • But doesn't know how to translate texts

Voice Assistant:

  • Understands voice commands
  • But doesn't know how to drive a car

Smart Keyboard:

  • Suggests the next words
  • But doesn't know how to play games

In Shopping

Product Suggestions:

  • Suggests products you might like
  • But doesn't know how to cook

Product Recognition:

  • Recognizes products in photos
  • But doesn't know how to write stories

In Entertainment

Video Suggestions:

  • Suggests videos based on what you watch
  • But doesn't know how to sing

Sound Enhancement:

  • Automatically improves sound quality
  • But doesn't know how to draw

3. Advantages

Why is Weak AI Useful?

1. Specialization:

  • Each program is specialized in one thing
  • This makes it excellent at its task

2. Efficiency:

  • Works quickly and accurately
  • Better than humans in some tasks

3. Availability:

  • Found everywhere
  • Easy to use

4. Continuous Improvement:

  • Improves over time
  • Learns from data

4. Limitations

What It Can't Do

1. Lack of Flexibility:

  • Can't do things outside its task
  • Example: a translation program doesn't know medicine

2. Lack of True Understanding:

  • Doesn't understand true meaning
  • Follows patterns only

3. Lack of Creativity:

  • Doesn't create new ideas
  • Works based on what it has learned

4. Lack of Generalization:

  • What it learns in one task doesn't apply to another
  • Example: recognizing cats doesn't help in recognizing dogs

5. Where Do We Find Weak AI?

Almost Everywhere

In Technology:

  • Smartphones
  • Computers
  • Smart home devices

In Services:

  • Automated customer service
  • Machine translation
  • Internet search

In Industry:

  • Robots in factories
  • Quality systems
  • Inventory management

In Medicine:

  • Medical image analysis
  • Diagnostic assistance
  • Drug discovery

6. How Does It Work?

Simple Process

1. Training:

  • Learns from a lot of data
  • About a specific task

2. Application:

  • Uses what it has learned
  • In the specific task

3. Improvement:

  • Learns from mistakes
  • Improves over time

Conclusion

  • Weak AI is dedicated to specific tasks
  • Found everywhere in our lives
  • Excellent at its task but limited outside it
  • This is the type we use today
