Beginnings: From Science Fiction to Reality

Objective

This chapter tells the story of the beginning of artificial intelligence, from the initial ideas in science fiction to the first practical attempts to create intelligent machines.

1. Initial Ideas

Science Fiction Inspires Reality

Before artificial intelligence became a reality, it existed in science fiction. Books and movies talked about machines that think like humans.

Examples from Science Fiction:

  • Science fiction novels about intelligent robots
  • Movies about machines that think and feel
  • Stories about smart computers

The Fundamental Question

"Can a machine think?"

This question has occupied scientists for a long time. Can we create a machine that thinks like a human?

2. First Practical Attempts

The 1950s: The Real Beginning

In the 1950s, scientists began to seriously think about creating artificial intelligence.

1950 - Turing Test:

  • Mathematician Alan Turing proposed a test
  • The idea: If we cannot distinguish between the responses of a machine and a human, the machine is intelligent
  • This test is still used today

1956 - Dartmouth Conference:

  • The first official conference on artificial intelligence
  • Scientists agreed on the name "artificial intelligence"
  • They set ambitious goals

3. Early Challenges

Why Was It Difficult?

Problems Faced by Scientists:

  1. Lack of Data:

    • There was not enough data for learning
    • Computers were limited
  2. Lack of Computing Power:

    • Computers were very slow
    • They were not powerful enough
  3. Lack of Understanding of How the Brain Works:

    • Scientists did not know exactly how humans think
    • It was difficult to simulate something we do not understand

4. Early Achievements

Early Programs

1951 - Chess Game Program:

  • The first program to play chess
  • It was simple but proved that machines can "think"

1960s - Problem-Solving Programs:

  • Programs that solve logical problems
  • Prove that machines can think logically

5. From Fiction to Reality

How Did Ideas Become Reality?

Steps:

  1. Science Fiction → inspires scientists
  2. Theoretical Ideas → scientists think about how to implement them
  3. First Experiments → simple practical attempts
  4. Gradual Progress → continuous improvements
  5. Today's Reality → AI everywhere

Conclusion

  • Artificial intelligence started as an idea in science fiction
  • The first practical attempts were in the 1950s
  • Scientists faced significant challenges but persevered
  • Every small step led to the major progress we see today
