TP2 - Transactions and Rollback

Objectives of the Lab

In this lab, you will:

  1. ✅ Create a money transfer system with transactions
  2. ✅ Observe the behavior of rollbacks
  3. ✅ Test different propagation levels
  4. ✅ Understand the self-invocation trap
  5. ✅ Use read-only transactions

Estimated duration: 1h30

Context

You are developing a simplified banking application. A money transfer must:

  • Debit the source account
  • Credit the destination account
  • Log the operation in an audit

Golden rule: If one step fails, EVERYTHING must be rolled back!

Part 1: Project Setup

1.1 Resume Project TP7.1

Continue with the datasource-demo project from TP7.1, or create a new project with the same dependencies.

// }

// Step 2: Credit the destination account

} catch (Exception e) {
// Log failure

}
}

/**

}
}

Part 5: Controller and Test Data

5.1 TransferController

// src/main/java/com/example/bank/controller/TransferController.java
package com.example.bank.controller;

import com.example.bank.model.Account;
import com.example.bank.model.TransactionLog;
import com.example.bank.service.AccountService;

import com.example.bank.service.TransferService;
import lombok.RequiredArgsConstructor;
import org.springframework.http.ResponseEntity;
import org.springframework.web.bind.annotation.*;

import java.math.BigDecimal;
import java.util.List;
import java.util.Map;

@RestController
@RequestMapping("/api/bank")
@RequiredArgsConstructor
public class TransferController {

private final AccountService accountService;
private final TransferService transferService;
private final AuditService auditService;

// === ACCOUNTS ===

@GetMapping("/accounts")
public List<Account> getAllAccounts() {
return accountService.getAllAccounts();
}

@GetMapping("/accounts/{accountNumber}")
public Account getAccount(@PathVariable String accountNumber) {
return accountService.getAccount(accountNumber);
}

// === TRANSFERS ===

@PostMapping("/transfer")
public ResponseEntity<String> transfer(@RequestBody Map<String, Object> request) {
String from = (String) request.get("from");
String to = (String) request.get("to");
BigDecimal amount = new BigDecimal(request.get("amount").toString());

transferService.transfer(from, to, amount);
return ResponseEntity.ok("Transfer successful!");
}

@PostMapping("/transfer-no-tx")
public ResponseEntity<String> transferNoTransaction(@RequestBody Map<String, Object> request) {
String from = (String) request.get("from");
String to = (String) request.get("to");
BigDecimal amount = new BigDecimal(request.get("amount").toString());

transferService.transferNoTransaction(from, to, amount);
return ResponseEntity.ok("Transfer successful!");
}

// === AUDIT ===

@GetMapping("/logs")
public List<TransactionLog> getAllLogs() {
return auditService.getAllLogs();
}

@GetMapping("/logs/{accountNumber}")
public List<TransactionLog> getAccountLogs(@PathVariable String accountNumber) {
return auditService.getLogsForAccount(accountNumber);
}
}

5.2 Initial Data

-- src/main/resources/data.sql
INSERT INTO accounts (account_number, owner_name, balance) VALUES
('ACC001', 'Alice Martin', 1000.00),
('ACC002', 'Bob Dupont', 500.00),
('ACC003', 'Charlie Bernard', 2500.00);

5.3 Configuration

# application-dev.properties (add)
spring.jpa.defer-datasource-initialization=true
spring.sql.init.mode=always

Part 6: Practical Tests

6.1 Test 1: Successful Transfer

# Check initial balances
curl http://localhost:8080/api/bank/accounts

# Transfer 200€ from ACC001 to ACC002
curl -X POST http://localhost:8080/api/bank/transfer \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"from":"ACC001", "to":"ACC002", "amount":200}'

# Check new balances
curl http://localhost:8080/api/bank/accounts

# Check logs
curl http://localhost:8080/api/bank/logs

Expected result:

  • ACC001: 1000 → 800€
  • ACC002: 500 → 700€
  • Log with status "SUCCESS"

6.2 Test 2: Insufficient Balance (Rollback)

# Attempt a transfer of 2000€ (ACC001 only has 800€)
curl -X POST http://localhost:8080/api/bank/transfer \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"from":"ACC001", "to":"ACC002", "amount":2000}'

# Verify that balances have NOT changed
curl http://localhost:8080/api/bank/accounts

# Verify that the failure log is present!
curl http://localhost:8080/api/bank/logs

Expected result:

  • ACC001: remains 800€ (no change)
  • ACC002: remains 700€ (no change)
  • Log with status "FAILED" and error message

6.3 Test 3: Without Transaction (DANGEROUS)

# Restart the application to reset data

# Try the transfer without transaction
curl -X POST http://localhost:8080/api/bank/transfer-no-tx \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"from":"ACC001", "to":"ACC002", "amount":200}'

# Check balances
curl http://localhost:8080/api/bank/accounts

Expected result (BUG!):

  • ACC001: 1000 → 800€ (debited!)
  • ACC002: remains 500€ (never credited!)
  • 200€ have disappeared! 💀

Part 7: Understanding REQUIRES_NEW

7.1 Why is the Audit Log Preserved?

Look at this diagram:

7.2 Exercise: Modify the Behavior

  1. In AuditService, change REQUIRES_NEW to REQUIRED
  2. Rerun test 2 (insufficient balance)
  3. Observe: the log is no longer created in case of failure!
// Try this temporarily:
@Transactional(propagation = Propagation.REQUIRED) // Instead of REQUIRES_NEW
public void logTransaction(...) { }

Part 8: The Self-Invocation Trap

8.1 The Problem

Add this method in TransferService:

// Method with the self-invocation trap
public void transferWithLogging(String from, String to, BigDecimal amount) {
log.info("External call...");

// ⚠️ TRAP: Direct call = no proxy = no transaction!
this.transfer(from, to, amount); // @Transactional ignored!
}

8.2 The Solution

@Service
@RequiredArgsConstructor
@Slf4j
public class TransferService {

private final AccountService accountService;
private final AuditService auditService;

// Injecting self to go through the proxy
@Autowired
private TransferService self;

public void transferWithLogging(String from, String to, BigDecimal amount) {
log.info("External call...");

// ✅ Goes through the proxy = active transaction!
self.transfer(from, to, amount);
}

@Transactional
public void transfer(String from, String to, BigDecimal amount) {
// ... existing code
}
}

Part 9: ReadOnly Transaction

9.1 Check Optimization

Add logging in AccountService:

@Transactional(readOnly = true)
public List<Account> getAllAccounts() {
log.info("Transaction readOnly = true");
List<Account> accounts = accountRepository.findAll();

// This will NOT be persisted because readOnly = true
accounts.forEach(a -> a.setBalance(BigDecimal.ZERO));

return accounts;
}

Test:

curl http://localhost:8080/api/bank/accounts
# Displayed balances are 0...

curl http://localhost:8080/api/bank/accounts
# But the real balances are unchanged!

Summary

What You Have Learned

ConceptExample
@TransactionalEnsures atomicity
RollbackRolls back everything in case of error
REQUIRES_NEWIndependent transaction
readOnlyOptimization for reads
Self-invocationSpring proxy trap

Golden Rules

1. Always use @Transactional on write operations
2. Use REQUIRES_NEW for audit logs
3. Avoid self-invocation
4. Use readOnly = true for reads
5. Never swallow exceptions
