Module 1: What Are LLMs?
Understanding the AI That Can Talk
This module introduces you to Large Language Models—the technology behind ChatGPT, Claude, and other AI assistants that seem to understand and generate human language.
What You'll Learn
In this module, you will:
- Understand what a language model is and how it predicts text
- Learn why "large" matters and how scale changed everything
- Explore the history from GPT to GPT-4
- Compare major providers like OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Meta
Module Structure

Key Concepts Preview
Language Model
A computer program trained to predict what word comes next in a sentence. Like autocomplete, but much more sophisticated.
Large Language Model (LLM)
A language model with billions of parameters, trained on vast amounts of text. The "large" part is what makes them so capable.
Parameters
The adjustable values in the model that are tuned during training. More parameters generally means more capability.
Training
The process of teaching the model by showing it massive amounts of text and having it learn patterns.
The Big Picture
Imagine you're trying to finish this sentence:
"The cat sat on the ___"
Your brain likely filled in "mat" or "floor" or "couch." That's because you've learned patterns from reading and hearing language your whole life.
LLMs do something similar—but they've "read" billions of pages of text and can complete not just sentences, but entire conversations, articles, and even code.
Why This Matters
Understanding LLMs helps you:
- Use AI tools more effectively in your work
- Make informed decisions about AI adoption
- Recognize limitations and not over-trust AI outputs
- Stay current with the most significant technology shift since the internet
Prerequisites
No technical background required! We'll explain everything using everyday analogies.
