Introduction to Cloud Computing

What is Cloud Computing?

Cloud computing is the on-demand delivery of computing resources via the Internet. Instead of buying and managing your own physical servers, you rent resources from a cloud provider.

Simple Analogy

Think of electricity: you don't build your own power plant, you plug into a socket and pay for what you consume. The cloud works the same way for computing.

Before the Cloud: Traditional Infrastructure

The 5 Characteristics of Cloud (NIST)

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) defines 5 essential characteristics:

1. On-Demand Self-Service

User → [Web Interface/API] → Resources automatically created

You can provision resources without human intervention from the provider.

2. Broad Network Access

┌────────────┐ ┌────────────┐ ┌────────────┐
│ Laptop │ │ Mobile │ │ Tablet │

│ │ │
└──────────────────┼──────────────────┘
│
[Internet]
│
┌────┴────┐
│ Cloud │
└─────────┘

Access from any device via the Internet.

3. Resource Pooling (Multi-tenant)

┌─────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Resource Pool │
├─────────────────────────────────────┤
│ ┌─────┐ ┌─────┐ ┌─────┐ │
│ │ VM1 │ │ VM2 │ │ VM3 │ ... │
│ │User1│ │User2│ │User1│ │
│ └─────┘ └─────┘ └─────┘ │
│ │
│ Resources shared among clients │
│ but logically isolated │
└─────────────────────────────────────┘

4. Rapid Elasticity

Normal load: ██████░░░░░░░░░░ (3 servers)
↓
Peak load: ████████████████ (10 servers) ← Auto-scaling
↓
Return to normal: ██████░░░░░░░░░░ (3 servers)

5. Measured Service

┌────────────────────────────────────┐
│ AWS Billing │
├────────────────────────────────────┤

│ S3 Storage : 100 GB × $0.023 │
│ Data Transfer : 50 GB × $0.09 │
├────────────────────────────────────┤
│ TOTAL : $74.80 │
└────────────────────────────────────┘
